Which Lawnmower To Purchase

Whether you are a new homeowner and have just purchased a house with your first garden, or you are a seasoned gardener wanting to make your lawn look the best, it is important to try and purchase the right lawnmower from the start. By choosing the correct mower from the beginning will ensure your lawn will grow and become established in the shortest time rewarding you with its beauty and appearance.

There are many factors to consider when choosing your new lawnmower. Should you go for an electric machine? perhaps a petrol or even a diesel? How about a cordless battery operated mower? Do you really need a self driven machine or would a push mower suffice? Cylinder or rotary blade action? Grassbox and rear roller for stripes? Roller or hover mower? Budget branded or quality manufactued? The list and options are as long as you want them to be as well as their cost prices. We have not mentioned appearance, styling, and ergonomics - but all these elements and factors will play a large factor in you buying the correct lawnmower.

WHICH LAWNMOWER

Push (Non Powered) Mowers : With no powered drive except your own energy a push lawnmower is suited towards the gardener who has a small and compact lawn. Available to buy at cheaper prices than an electric or petrol machine push mowers are available both with and without a grass collection facility. All push mowers are of the cylinder blade type.

Electric Hover: Although still classed as a push mower an electric hover mower uses a built in electric motor to drive its cutting blade (options are metal or plastic) and an uplift / hover fan. To be effective the grass must be mowed frequently to allow a cushion of air under the mower to be created lifting the unit up and allowing it to float (hence the phrase hover). The operator then cuts the lawn using a side to side action or in straight lines depending on whether the mower has a grass collection box. Hover type lawnmowers are ideal for use in gardens where the lawn has patio slabs and steps inlaid - the mower can glide over these without any damage to its blade or the operator.

Electric Rotary: This is one of the top selling designs of lawnmowers suited for small to medium sized lawns. An electric rotary mower is similar in description to a hover mower but instead of using a cushion of air to lift the unit up, the mower is mounted on adjustable wheels and also possibly a roller. By having wheels a rotary mower is better suited for gardens with bumpy or uneven lawns and also can cope with longer grass better. If the unit has a rear roller this will also produce a striped finish providing the lawn is established and is mowed in a strict order each time. Most units have either a grass bag or grass collection box fitted, however a few compact models you can buy (usually the cheapest ones) are just simply a mower on their own.

Electric Cylinder: Often referred to as a traditional lawnmower a cylinder type produces the best finish possible on a lawn. This is the type of mower used on bowling greens, cricket grounds, and sports arenas. To be effective your lawned area must be flat, with no decorative edgings or stones inlaid. A cylinder type will also be the most effective in collecting the grass - this is due to the throwing action of its cylinder cutter. Several brands of cylinder mowers can also be fitted with a scarifier unit - this is a spiked unit which removes moss and thatch from the lawn encouraging new growth and a healthy lawn at the same time.
